Some drinks feel like they were invented for conversation.
An Irish coffee is one of them.
It’s warm. A little sweet. A little strong. Perfect for slow mornings, late nights, or sitting on the couch talking about life the way Dave and Reese did in Ep. 150: What Midlife Does to a Marriage on the Manic Joy podcast.
For this version, we’re using Coole Swan Irish Cream Liqueur, which gives the drink a rich, creamy texture and smooth chocolate-vanilla flavor.
If you like traditional Irish coffee, this version might ruin you for the regular one.
What makes Coole Swan different
Most people think of Irish coffee as coffee, whiskey, sugar, and cream.
Coole Swan changes that.
It’s made with Irish whiskey, Belgian white chocolate, and fresh dairy cream. So when you add it to coffee, you get the warmth of Irish coffee with a dessert-like finish that’s smoother and richer.
Translation: it’s dangerously easy to drink.
Ingredients
1 cup hot, freshly brewed coffee
1½ oz Coole Swan Irish Cream Liqueur
½ oz Irish whiskey (optional but recommended)
1 tsp brown sugar (optional, depending on how sweet you like it)
Lightly whipped cream
Grated nutmeg or chocolate shavings for garnish (optional)
How to make it
Warm your mug
Fill your mug with hot water for about 30 seconds, then dump it out. This keeps the drink hotter longer.
Add the coffee
Pour in one cup of hot coffee.
Stir in the brown sugar
This step is optional. Coole Swan already adds sweetness, so taste and adjust if you prefer.
Add the Coole Swan
Pour in 1½ oz Coole Swan Irish Cream.
Add Irish whiskey (optional)
Add ½ oz Irish whiskey if you want a little more warmth and depth.
Top with lightly whipped cream
Gently float the cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon.
Finish with garnish
Sprinkle a little grated nutmeg or chocolate shavings on top.
Pro tip
Don’t stir the drink after adding the cream.
Sip the hot coffee through the cream layer. That contrast between warm coffee and cool cream is what makes Irish coffee special.
When to serve this
This drink works surprisingly well in a few moments:
Late night conversations
After dinner instead of dessert
Cold winter evenings
Lazy weekend mornings
Podcast recording sessions
Basically any time you want something warm, comforting, and slightly indulgent.
